Her Excellency Ferial Ismail Ashraff presented her credentials as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Singapore to President SR Nathan July 2011. Ferial Ismail Ashraff is a Sri Lankan politician, activist, social worker. Widow of the Founder Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the National Unity Alliance (NUA), the late M.H.M. Ashraff, Ferial took charge of the NUA upon the untimely demise of her husband and went on to contest and win his seat in the Digamadulla District of Sri Lanka at the General Elections of 2000, representing the United People's Freedom Alliance.
Appointed Cabinet Minister for Housing (a position she held till 2010) she was responsible for initiating and completing several housing projects during her tenure, particularly in the Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka, which were ravaged by the Tsunami of 2004.
