SL Army captures Karadipokku Junction in Kilinochchi

Troops of Task Force 1, advancing towards the heart of Kilinochchi, have reported another victory against LTTE terrorists by gaining control over the Karadipokku junction located between Paranthan and Kilinochchi along the A-9 main road on January 1st.(Lankapuvath)
 

Cabinet Reshuffle – President Minister of Media

“All that was lost to you due to terrorism will be restored. It will not be long before your brothers and sisters who are trapped in areas such as Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu can be happy. That is when, just like the New Dawn in the East, there will be the New Spring in the North,” said President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a message to the people of Jaffna in connection with the “Future Minds of Jaffna" exhibition currently being held in Jaffna. Minister of Foreign Affairs’ New Year Message

In his New Year message, Minister Bogollagama stated that the past year has been quite significant in raising Sri Lanka's international profile. The notable highlight of our successful diplomacy was the hosting of the 15th SAARC Summit in Colombo, with the participation of 8 Heads of State or Government and 7 Observers, he said. He added that the assumption of the SAARC Chair has imposed a heavy responsibility on Sri Lanka. However, Sri Lanka under the dynamic leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be equal to the task of discharging its responsibilities for the greater benefit and welfare of the peoples of the SAARC region in the coming year. Sri Lanka wins first test match against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka won the first Test match against Bangladesh by 107 runs. The match was played at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on December 31st , 2008.(Lankapuvath)

Intercity train service between Colombo and Anuradhapura

The Government is to commence an intercity train service between Colombo Fort and Anuradhapura with a maximum travel time of three hours. (Dept. of Information)
