Minister of State for External Affairs meets President Mahinda
Rajapaksa
Indian Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamad called on
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 27th February 2009 at
Temple Trees, the official residence of the President. The VIPs had
been contemplating at length the current political situation in Sri
Lanka and the ongoing humanitarian war as well. The plight of
civilians at the hands of LTTE had been a focal point of the
discussion, and they discussed on how they could help to evacuate
these civilians forcibly kept back by the LTTE. (Dept. of

SAARC Foreign Ministers
to give directions towards finding meaningful solution to common
challenges
Foreign Minister
Rohitha Bogollagama said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa stressed
the need for the Foreign Ministers to be seized of current common
challenges before us in South Asia and the duty of the Council is to
give directions towards finding meaningful solutions. Minister
Bogollagama addressed the media on 28th February 2009 on
the outcome of the SAARC 31st session of the Council of Ministers’
Meeting and Preceding Meetings in Colombo (Ministry of Foreign

LTTE not allowing
civilians a safe passage – UN Ambassador to Japan
Inside a closed door meeting, top United Nations officials discussed
the worsening humanitarian situation in the rebel controlled areas
of Sri Lanka where thousands of civilians are being held by the LTTE
without allowing them to escape in to liberated zones. The meeting
took place on Friday, 27th February 2009 in New York.
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes, who
had earlier visited Sri Lanka, briefed the Security Council on his
findings from the visit and expressed grave concern over the plight
of the civilians trapped in a small pocket of rebel-held land

Japan funds Rs.185
million for refurbishing sacred city
The Tourism Ministry in collaboration with the North Central
Province’s Local Government Department has commenced renovating the
Anuradhapura Sacred City 15.6 km long road to meet international
standards at a cost of Rs 185 million, Ministry sources said. The
Japanese Government funded project is to be completed by July 2010.
The work commenced from the Anuradhapura Lion Pillar recently.
