Christmas was celebrated at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore on 28 December 2022 with an evening of prayers, carols, and entertainment.  

The programme commenced with the welcome address by the High Commissioner Sashikala Premawardhane, followed by the opening prayers by Rev. Father Julian Mariyarathnam from St. Marry’s of Angels Church of Singapore. Rev. Father Julian delivered a brief sermon, recalling that Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Lord Jesus Christ and his teachings, wherein one is reminded of the importance of compassion and kindness.

Welcoming those present to the event, High Commissioner Premawardhane emphasized the importance of Christmas in bringing everyone together in the spirit of peace, harmony, and togetherness.       The High Commissioner quoted from the Christmas message of President Ranil Wickeremesinghe, which highlighted the importance of extending compassion and assistance to one another in the context of the unprecedented economic crisis that the country is facing. She added that throughout Covid 19 pandemic and the current difficult economic situation, the relationship between Sri Lanka and Singapore has embodied that spirit of compassion and assistance.  

High Commissioner recalled the invaluable assistance extended throughout the Covid 19 pandemic by the Government of Singapore through Temasek Foundation International, other charitable organisations and Singapore community to support Sri Lanka’s healthcare response to the pandemic and to keep the Sri Lankans safe during the pandemic. The High Commissioner indicated that the Sri Lankan Christian community form an important and integral part of the social fabric of Sri Lanka demonstrating its multi-cultural and multi- religious nature. 

Rev. Dr. Samuel Kunjumone from True Light Community Church in Singapore concluded the religious observances with the closing prayers and blessings for Sri Lanka all the staff of the High Commission. 

Christmas carols were sung by the Embassy staff and their family members. The young children present were then treated to a visit by Santa Claus who distributed gifts.

The event concluded with all guests being treated to evening tea.
