High Commission of Sri Lankan in Singapore hosted an iftar dinner at the Sri Lanka Residence on Wednesday, 19th April 2023 as mark of solidarity and respect for the religious and cultural traditions of Sri Lankan Muslims living in Singapore.
Representatives of the diplomatic corps in Singapore, Sri Lankan expatriate Muslim community and some special invitees attended the event.
Welcoming those present at the event, High Commissioner Sashikala Premawardhane highlighted the Sri Lanka’s rich heritage of the influenced by the four major religious traditions and added that Sri Lankans are fortunate enough to enjoy a diverse, colorful, unique and blended culture. Acknowledging the significant contributions of the Muslim community to Sri Lanka’s prosperity and progress since independence, the High Commissioner stated that throughout the history of Sri Lanka, Muslims have been living in coexistence and peace with other races and religions in Sri Lankan society.
High Commissioner Premawardhane said in her address to the gathering that lesson learnt from observing Ramadan is to acknowledge the importance of empathy and strengthen relations within our families and our society. Concluding her remarks the High Commissioner urged the gathering to join across cultures and faiths for the common objective of building a vibrant and compassionate nation towards the economic recovery of the country.
Mr. Ahamed Al Attas, from the Balavi mosque in Singapore conducted the sermon and Muslim religious observances. The attendees engaged in Magrib prayers following the breaking of the fast.
The event concluded with a traditional Sri Lankan Iftar dinner organized by the High Commission of Sri Lanka.
